Virtuous Garden South Korean Pavilion x LDB23
Can we live harmoniously and sustainably in this age of globalisation? ‘Virtuous Garden combines virtual and physical exhibits in the mixed-reality pavilion to show how design from traditions can help bridge the gap between humans, nature, modernity, and the future world by following the principles of balance, coexistence, and collaboration.
Inspired by traditional Korean garden design, which places people within a larger natural cycle, 'Virtuous Garden' invites visitors into a pavilion made of reclaimed wood to listen to Geomungo (a traditional Korean instrument) music, watch videos of both virtual and real gardens and contemplate topics such as the circular economy and the reuse of waste - just like the Korean scholars, who frequented gardens 500 years ago to consider moral quandaries and human dilemmas. As we seek new, inventive and sustainable ways to commemorate heritage, this installation establishes a 'new traditional' response to heritage and craftsmanship for the next generation.
